Asheville Private Brewery Tours & Tastings
Burial, for some, is a necessary step to reach the afterlife. At Burial Beer Co., they see it as a celebration— of the cyclical nature of life, harvest and the brewing process. Their logo, a simple image of a sickle reminds patrons of their vision to become a farmhouse brewery and their connection to their namesake.
Currently Burial operates on a 10bbl brewhouse in downtown Asheville complete with a taproom and beer garden and is in the process of opening a second location outside of the city of Asheville to operate a production brewery, urban farm, locally purveyed restaurant and a 2 story tasting room.
One thing we noticed while scouting out this tour was that locals, including brewers and staff from other breweries, like to hang out here. Once we tried the beer, we got it. We’re fairly certain you will, too!
Located in the heart of Asheville’s River Arts District, Wedge Studios was founded by metal artist John Payne. A pioneer of the River Arts District, Payne converted this 100 year old triangular three story building into a studio for his metal “Kinetosaurs” and leased the remaining studio spaces to fellow artists. Now home to 20+ working artist studios, Payne’s legacy is alive and vibrant. Founded in 2008, The Wedge Brewery anchors the dock level of the building with a 10BBL brewery/tasting room and an expansive outdoor seating area.
The Wedge Brewery added its second brewery/tasting room in 2017 to expand with its River Arts neighborhood. The Wedge at Foundation is located a mile upstream from Wedge Studios. This historic building was constructed by Hans Rees and Sons in 1898 to house what would become the largest leather tannery in the country. Rees invented the process by which cowhides are cured, tanned and finished to turn high-powered engine transmissions. Today the Foundation buildings are very much a part of the River Arts community. Known for the awesome large graffiti murals, the area is a draw for some of the nations top muralists.
A visit to one of these locations for a few beers and lunch from a gourmet food truck is a perfect stop for a Saturday afternoon.
|Wicked Weed Funkatorium
The Funkatorium ales pull inspiration from the Belgian Lambic. Their sour program focuses on using wine barrels from all over the country and aging on their proprietary Wicked Wild strain of yeast that their brewers have carefully blended over several years. These sour beers are defined by tartness, complexity, dryness and always, drinkability. Each beer in their “From The Funkatorium Series” will age in the barrel up to 3 years and then be blended to create a balanced yet unique experience for any palette.
If you like sours, Funkatorium is Sour Heaven in Asheville.
Catawba Brewing, which has been making delicious beer in Western NC since 1999, opened their third location on April 1, 2015 in the South Slope brewery district of Asheville. The 5600 square foot space features many reclaimed materials for the seating and cooler wrap. The space has two very cool but distinct bar areas. The great hall has 24 taps and an indoor/outdoor space. The Rickhouse, or barrel room, has 5-6 barrel aged beers on tap. A covered patio and outdoor deck make this this location a year round destination for enjoying Catawba’s tasty suds and welcoming atmosphere.
We look forward to enjoying this perfect setting and Catawba’s beers during a fabulous beer-paired dinner.
This year we are looking forward to visiting with the cool folks at one of the newest breweries on the Asheville scene. Archetype Brewing Company began in 2016 as an idea, coming to fruition in early 2017. Founders, Brad Casanova and Steven Anan, were no strangers to craft beer, having worked in the industry in two of the most highly regarded US beer meccas: Colorado and Western North Carolina.
From their website:
In our travels we’ve met a lot of different types of people, had a lot of different beer, and seen a lot of weird things. One thing remains constant – Beer brings people together. It transcends social class and personality differences. Beer makes equal the prince and pauper, if only for a pint. We also believe that there is a beer for just about everyone; whether you’re an everyman, a lover, a ruler, or an outlaw, our goal is to substantiate that belief.
|New Belgium Brewery
New Belgium’s location in Asheville has finally come together with it’s amazing-looking digs parked right on the French Broad River and a tasting room called the Liquid Center. During our private VIP visit, we will get an in depth view of the brewery as well as a chance to check out the work of the local artists who helped give this brewery some Ashevillian vibes. In true New Belgium form, there will be a few surprises along the way and some serious tasting opportunities as well.
Privately Guided Tour of Asheville
|Tour the Town in an Old-Fashioned Private Trolley Car
Plan to experience Asheville’s history, architecture and culture beyond the beer as we trek around the town in a nostalgic privately chartered trolley car. This is a relaxing way to hear about and see for yourself why Asheville was named the “#1 Best in the U.S. Travel 2017 Destination” by Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world.
“The vibrant small city is known for its welcoming, creative spirit and eclectic architecture. Its thriving artistic community and booming food and drink scene – all surrounded by spectacular natural beauty – is putting it firmly on the map,” Lonely Planet said in naming Asheville the top place to travel in 2017.
Artisanal Chocolate Indulgence
French Broad Chocolates
When Ruth met Jael and Dan, the owners of French Broad Chocolates, and heard their story and tasted their wares, she knew that she had found the perfect complement to the breweries on our Asheville Beer Safari Weekend. French Broad is certainly part of the brewing community in Asheville- with its chocolate nibs finding their way into the hearts and creations of local brewers such as Green Man Brewing’s Chocolate Porter and Pisgah Brewing’s Chocolate Stout and Coffee Chocolate Stout, among others.
From hunting out high quality cacao from Central and South America for use in their delicious products to ensuring that every one of their mouth-watering chocolate bars is hand wrapped in a heavy gold foil with colorful grosgrain ribbon and a 100% recycled label, these two have a true passion for chocolate. It shows in their products and you’ll see- well, actually you’ll taste- this passion during our chocolate tasting experience at French Broad Chocolates.
