Your Beercation Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1 Saturday: Amsterdam – Welcome Aboard, Let’s Have a Beer!
Amsterdam & The Dutch Beer Scene
Join us onboard for a welcome drink after unpacking and settling in. Then it’s time to see the real Amsterdam during our privately guided walking tour of this one-of-a-kind city. As we wind our way through various parts of town we’ll learn about the history, architecture and sights of “A’dam” and finally end up at our first brewery of the week, Brouwerij Het Ij. Following our visit here for a tour and tasting, we head back to the barge for our welcome aboard dinner. After dinner if you are not too jet-lagged from the trip overseas, you can join our beer guide for some beer hunting- perhaps to a bar that has all Dutch beers! (Beer Hunting could be visiting an historic pub or searching the local shops for rare and unique beers to sample or add to your collection.) D
Day 2 Sunday: Amsterdam and Around
Cheese, Churches, Chocolates & Beer!
Breakfast is served on board before we disembark and board our motor coach to opening weekend at the World famous Keukenhof Gardens. With more than 7 million flower bulbs planted by hand yearly, it is the most famous spring garden in the world and a must see for anyone traveling to the Netherlands during season. We will spend a few hours here to explore the first blooms of the season before heading off to the Brouwerij de 7 Deugden (7 Virtues). Here, in addition to our tour, we will work our way through a very special beer and cheese pairing. (Because of course you can’t visit the Netherlands without tasting some local cheese!) Following this, we’re off to Harlaam, Netherlands to see a brewery in a church: The award winning Jopen brewery, or more specifically Jopenkerk (Kerk translates to church). Jopenkerk is a fully functional active brewery built inside of the old St. James Church, with its stunning stained glass windows reflecting a rainbow of colors right onto the tanks. Here we will hear about the history of Harlaam & the brewery and then we have arranged for a private beer and chocolate pairing masterclass with a local chocolatier! Finally, we head back to Amsterdam for dinner aboard our barge. B,L,D
Day 3 Monday: Amsterdam to Dordrecht
Brewnique Breweries and Historic Holland
Today we enjoy a morning sail during breakfast. Our crew will drop us in Breukelen, where our motorcoach will meet us so we can head off to Speciaalbierbrouwerij Duits & Lauret for a tour of their new digs – a 19th century fortress! Here we will have an opportunity to sample some of the special cheese that is being aged there and of course, taste some of their award winning beers. Next, it is off to Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland. This charming harbor town dates back to 1220. Our local guide will help us explore and learn more about its history, and lead us to our next stop – Stadsbrouwerij Dordrecht. This unique microbrewery has a very interesting story behind it. It was actually created for the purpose of providing internships for students who, due to various unfortunate circumstances, did not complete their education and are looking to return to school. The brewery sits on a property and in a building that once housed the oldest Dutch brewery -dating back to 1433. After our tour and tasting here, we will head back to the barge which will be docked a few blocks from the brewery, for dinner. If you’re up for some more of what’s going on in Dordrecht after dinner, you can join Mike, your beer guide, to check out one or two of our favorite local pubs. B,D
Day 4 Tuesday: Dordrecht to Antwerp (visit to Leuven)
Beer Doctors, Beer Farmers & The World’s Longest Bar
Today the barge is heading to Antwerp-the city known by some for its diamonds; by others for its gem of a beer bar, the infamous Kulminator. After a morning sail and breakfast, we will disembark at the town of Willemsted where we will meet our private motorcoach and head off to the gorgeous university town of Leuven. Here, we will join our guide for a very special walking tour of the city where you will learn about the history and sites of Leuven from a beer-centric (what else?) point of view! You will have free time after this for lunch your own and to sightsee, shop or seek out new brews on the Old Market Square, which is lined with more than 40 bars, giving it the nickname “the world’s longest bar”! In keeping with the University theme, we then make a very special visit to the beer professors- Dr. Freddy Delvaux and his son Dr. Filip Delvaux who run a consulting company where they perform quality control as well as create recipes for some of the top breweries in Belgium! They also have museum created from the original brewery on their site as well as a brewpub, Brouwerij de Kroon (crown), where we will of course, taste the latest on tap! Then we head off to visit a farm brewery, Hof Ten Dormaal, where Andre Janssens and his family grow their own barley and hops…and make some incredibly delicious beers! By now you will have surely worked up an appetite so it’s back to the barge where dinner awaits us thanks to our private onboard chef! After dinner, relax or join your beer guide for beer hunting around Antwerp. B,D
Day 5 Wednesday: Antwerp
Enjoy breakfast on board before we head off to explore Antwerp with our favorite local guide. After our entertaining and insightful tour of this eclectic city, we will be visiting the Stadsbrouwerij De Koninck which is housed in an awesome new interactive visitor center. We will explore the center followed by a tasting of their beers, as well as some delicious cheese and meats from the local culinary stars that are collaborating with the brewery. The rest of the afternoon is yours to hunt for diamonds and beer and other historical and cultural gems that this city has to offer. We will meet again later for a special beer-paired dinner at one of Antwerp’s marvelous restaurants.
Day 6 Thursday: Antwerp to Dordrecht
Trappist Traditions and Farm Breweries
After a leisurely breakfast during our morning sail, we hop off the barge and on to our coach for our ride to Westmalle, where we will enjoy a guided tour of the grounds of the abbey and learn about the history of the brouwerij, cheese making and the farm located here as well. We will head into the Café Trappisten where we can taste the beers fresh from the source and enjoy a hearty lunch. From here, it is off to visit our friend Ronald Mengerenck, at his brewery, Dochtor van de Korenaar. Dinner is back on the barge which is docked in Dordrecht again this evening, giving us a great chance to visit our favorite local haunts there a second time this week! B,L,D
Day 7 Friday: Dordrecht to Amsterdam
Sailing into A Fantastic Finale Full of Fabulous Beer!
This morning relax on board and watch the scenery as we enjoy a relaxed morning sail. Our coach meets us late morning and whisks us off to visit the town of Gouda and then to Brouwerij De Molen. Molen means “windmill” in Dutch, and this brewery started in a windmill where we will be able to tour and taste some of the best beers coming out of the Netherlands. There also happens to be a delicious restaurant there where we will enjoy lunch (with beer, of course!) Afterwards, we will have an opportunity to visit their bottle shop- which houses a pretty impressive selection of international brews.
And just when you think things can’t get any better, we head over to The National BierBank. This is a very special beer cellar housed in a fort outside of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and run by our good friend, beer expert and author, Fiona de Lange. The beers in the beer bank are monitored as they are aged under prefect conditions. During our visit we will be able to tour the fort and experience a tasting of some exceptional vintage beers.
Later, join us back on the barge for our farewell dinner. After dinner relax on the barge, head into town to explore on your own or join your beer guide for a final beer hunting expedition in the medieval city. B,L,D
Day 8 Saturday: Amsterdam
A final breakfast on board before we disembark our barge to depart for flights home or wherever your travels will take you!
