Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Saturday, October 26, 2019 Doornik (Tournai)

Barge mooring in Tournai next to the Le Pont des TrousWelcome aboard! After unpacking and settling in, we will meet the crew and our fellow passengers for a welcome drink and a brief but important orientation. Then we are off to our first brewery of the week Brasserie Dubuisson, which was founded in 1769 and has been kept in the same family for 8 generations. After our tour and tasting, we’ll head back to the barge for our welcome aboard dinner. If you are not too jet-lagged and up for some beer hunting this evening you can join Mike, your beer guide, in exploring some of the local pubs in Tournai. D

Day 2 Sunday, October 27, 2019 Tournai – Oudenaarde

uth picking up some Westvleteren 12's

Enjoy breakfast on board before we head off to visit Westvleteren, where monks brew what is widely acclaimed as “the best beer in the world”. Here we will taste their famous beer in their In de Vrede pub, where you will be able to purchase a tasty lunch. There is also a small gift shop where they sometimes have 6 packs available for purchase. If we are lucky, we’ll be taking home some nice souvenirs! Then, it’s off to drive through farmland and hop fields to a place that is a favorite among many Belgian beer fans- St. Bernardus brewery- for a tour and tasting of their world class beers!

Then we’re off to visit one of Belgium’s coolest brewers at his brewery, St. Canarus. “Dr. Canarus” is quite the character and his beers reflect that- from his tasty Tripel to the “Virgin of Gottem”-a blonde beer which has a single hopflower added to each bottle by hand! Dr. Canarus also has a beer called Pere Canard. Canard means duck in French, but is also a term used to mean drunk. No worries if you are feeling a bit ducky though, you are on beercation! After our visit to St. Canarus our coach will bring us back to the barge in Oudenaarde for dinner.

After dinner, relax onboard or join your beer guide for beer hunting around Antwerp. B & D

Day 3 Monday, October 28, 2019 Oudenaarde – Ghent

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast onboard then its off to visit 2 classic Belgium Breweries. Our First visit is to Brouwerij Huyghe, founded in 1906 and is famous for their tasty Belgium Strong Golden Ale Delirium Tremens. After our visit here, we are off to Van Steenberge Brewery where we’ll have a tour & tasting.

Following our visit to Van Steenberge we’ll head back on the motorcoach to Ghent where we’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening on our own to explore this magnificent medieval town. There are also some great pubs here that we won’t want to miss. And if you are looking for more than the pub scene for dinner, there are plenty of restaurants to tempt our taste buds with a local flair. We’ll return to the Barge docked a few kilometers away by taxi at our leisure. B & L

Day 4 Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Gent – (Brussels) – Dendermonde

After we finish our breakfast onboard this morning, we are heading to Comic strip images to sketchBrussels via motorcoach. In Brussels we’ll have a tour and tasting at Brouwerij Cantillon. Cantillon is a family run brewery which makes world class Lambic, Gueuze, Faro and Kriek where nothing there has changed since 1900! After our visit at Cantillon our motorcoach will drop us off closer to the historic center of town. There, we’ll have the rest of the day to explore this fabulous city from the huge Grand Place to the abundance of great beery pubs to the comic wall murals adorning the buildings. There is no shortage of great restaurants or pubs to choose from for lunch your own. We’ll gather together later this evening for dinner where we’ll have a chance to try some of the local specialties and beer, of course! Afterwards, our coach will take us back to our barge which will be awaiting our arrival in Dendermonde. B, D

Day 5 Wednesday, October 30, 2019 Dendermonde – Antwerp

Make sure to eat a hearty breakfast onboard this morning, we have a serious day of brewery visits ahead of us! On today’s agenda are Bosteels and Malheur breweries-both known for “inventing” the idea of fermenting strong pale ale by the méthode Champenoise, making a beer that resembles champagne. Then this very special day continues with a visit to Palm Brewery, along with a visit to their stud farm where we will visit their magnificent draught horses, mascot of Brouwerij Palm, which have been saved from extinction. It’s no coincidence that Palm concentrates on breeding primarily chestnut Belgian draught horses. Their amber-colored coat and white mane is the equine picture of a nice glass of Palm with a perfect white head! After visiting the horses we finish off this perfect day with dinner onboard the barge. After dinner, relax or join your beer guide for beer hunting around Antwerp. B, L & D

Day 6 Thursday, October 31, 2019 Antwerp – Dordecht

After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we’ll set off for a walking tour of Antwerp with our private guide. We’ll finish at one of the cool local pubs where you can grab a beer and even stay for lunch if you’d like. Then you’ll have free time to roam and explore Antwerp on your own, check out the other pubs or take a self-guided visit of Stadsbrouwerij De Koninck (the Antwerp city brewery since 1833). You may even want to pop into one of the cool museums. We’ll meet up later this afternoon to hop back on our coach and take a short ride over to visit one of the newest breweries in Antwerp, Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie. After our visit, we’ll meet our bus to head to Dordrecht, the oldest, and in our opinion, one of the most charming towns in the Netherlands. Here we’ll have dinner on board, and then if you’re still thirsty you can join Mike, your beer guide, in exploring one of the local pubs. B & D

Day 7 Friday, November 1, 2019 Dordrecht – (Schoonhoven) – Amsterdam

Enjoy an unhurried breakfast while we stay on board to enjoy a morning sail to Schoonhoven. Then we head via motorcoach to La Trappe, one of only two Trappist breweries in the Netherlands. Here we will tour, as well as enjoy lunch with (of course) beer. Next it’s off to Amsterdam and another very cool local brewery with award-winning beers. Then it’s time to head back to the barge for our Farewell Dinner on board. After dinner you can join our beer guide for some beer hunting or enjoy the night life in “A’dam” on your own. B, L & D

Day 8 Saturday, November 2, 2019 Amsterdam

I was blown away at Ruth and Mike’s gift for knowing their guests. Though there were others on the trip, I always felt special and important and that was a great feeling. They certainly know the best of the best (breweries, pubs, eateries, and key sights to see), and it was clear that they are well liked AND respected in the industry. At many breweries they were welcomed as longtime friends, and that was true for other establishments as well. I have no doubt that I would book another tour with Bon Beer Voyage if I have the opportunity again, I’m actually counting on it. . Thank you Ruth and Mike for such a wonderful time.

– Kat D., Boca Raton, FL

Wow! Westvleteren, 9 other breweries, 7 cities, tons of the coolest beer bars, Super Hosts that ensure you have no worries and don’t really need to plan anything (thanks Mike and Ruth!), and a truly unlimited amount of the best choice of beers I have ever encountered in the coolest places! If you want a really want a truly organized trip that is not cookie cutter or “touristy” feeling, and you have a natural love for beer and experiences, book this trip!

Beercation and Brewery Tour to Rodenbach

Thanks Ruth and Mike for another wonderful Beercation. Our expectations were high after having such a great time with you last year traveling from Amsterdam to Bruges. Once again, you exceeded our expectations! The range of breweries was fabulous from the back room brew kettle at Canarus and the endless aging barrels at Rodenbach to the fully modern operation at Chimay. The group was great and the crew of the Iris made our time on the barge lots of fun. We’re looking forward to traveling with you again!

– Karen & Joe Levendusky, Groton, MA

Our tour was such a fun and unique experience. The brewery tours have a great balance of history and brewery identity along with their take on their unique brewing process, and there is ample time to taste many local beers. Most of the tours that you get at breweries would be extremely difficult if not impossible to get on your own or through another source. Ruth and Mike are amazing tour guides and feel like they are a part of your family from the moment you meet them. They know these brewers and locals well and ensure their guests get all kinds of special treatment! I’m already looking at their upcoming schedule for my next tour!

Please Read our Terms & Conditions, and complete your Signature & Release Form before you travel. You will need to sign and then either mail or fax this page back to us at least 30 days prior to tour departure-thanks.

Our beer tour itineraries are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather, transportation problems, or an unexpected business closure. We’re continually looking for ways to improve our tours and we sometimes come across a special new pub or brewery since the itinerary was published that we’d like to share with you. Since our beer tours are planned far in advance, we may occasionally adjust the itinerary as necessary to provide you with the best trip possible! Since a minimum number of passengers are required in order to run each trip, we suggest you refrain from non-refundable air purchases until 2 months prior to your departure date or confirmation of sailing.

Important Passport Information: Passengers are responsible for ensuring that their passport expiration date is within the validity period of the counties they will be traveling to. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip (this applies to Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and is recommended for the United Kingdom. France requires a 3 month validity period). Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.
