What You Need to Know for You Upcoming Travels
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about ETIAS and the UK ETA lately, so we thought it’d be helpful to share the latest updates—and some travel tips to make your trip planning a little easier.
ETIAS Delayed Until Late 2026
Good news if you’ve been getting ready for the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)—you’ve got more time! Originally supposed to roll out in mid-2025, ETIAS is now delayed until the end of 2026. So, for now, visa-free travelers can keep visiting most European countries without needing this pre-screening. That said, it’s still a good idea to keep an eye on updates so you’re prepared when ETIAS finally kicks in.
Heading to the UK? Don’t Forget to Apply for Your ETA
If you’re planning to visit the UK, here’s something important to remember: they have a different system in place. It’s called the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), and it’s something U.S. citizens and other eligible travelers need to apply for before heading over. The application process is simple—usually processed in about three days—and it’ll cost you £10 per person.
If you’re just connecting through a UK airport, you don’t need the ETA, but it might be a good idea to get one anyway—just in case a delay or cancellation forces you to leave the airport unexpectedly. You can apply directly through the UK government’s website or their ETA app.
Tourism Fees Are on the Rise Across Europe
A lot of European cities are introducing new fees or hiking up existing tourist taxes to deal with overcrowding and offset the strain of mass tourism. For example, Venice has rolled out a fee for day-trippers, but if you’re staying overnight, you’re off the hook. Your hotel should give you the necessary exemption form or a link to fill it out before you arrive.
Also, some cities are increasing hotel taxes, so make sure to check the regulations for your destination to avoid any surprises. It’s always a good idea to budget accordingly!
As always, staying on top of changing travel policies will help ensure a smooth trip. Safe travels!
