Name: Aphrodite (in Canada aka Aphrodisiaque or Aphrodisiac)
Style: American Stout
Brewery: Microbrasserie Dieu Du Ciel. website
Country: Canada
Region: St-Jérôme, Quebec
ABV: 6.5% Abv
How served: 11.5 oz capped bottle poured into a De Struise Brouwers glass.
I paired this beer with: The Saints vs. Seahawks wild card game.
Tasted on: Saturday January 8th, 2011
Note: This is a stout brewed with real cocoa and vanilla beans.
It poured a dark brown/ black with a fluffy 2 ½ finger beige head leaving a minimal lacing on the glass. The nose was mostly cocoa and coffee and a hint of vanilla, nothing in the nose was overwhelming. The taste was of mocha, not on the sweet side but more of a bitter sweet mocha made with a deep roasted coffee. As with the nose, the vanilla was well hidden and blended in well. The mouthfeel was a medium body with a nice carbonation level. The drinkability was excellent, as this wasn’t a “sweet drink”, nor was it too bitter & was more like drinking dessert, one which you would want a second helping.
On the Label: Aphrodite is a black ale expressing aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Never too sweet, this highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with first rate cocoa and vanilla beans.
