Beer #44 Underlig Jul aka Nøgne Ø Peculiar Yule

Nøgne Ø Peculiar Yule

Name: Nøgne Ø Peculiar Yule (aka Underlig Jul)

Style: Spiced Beer.

Brewery: Nøgne Ø Det Kompromisslose Bryggeri A/S website

Country: Norway

Region:  Grimstad

ABV: 6.30%

How served: 500ml capped bottle poured into a Ommegang glass.

My Overall Opinion: Very Good

I paired this beer with: Chicken baked with Greek dressing, spinach & mushrooms.

Tasted on: Tuesday December 08, 2009

Note: This was a very tasty beer. The spices were well balanced and were neither over nor under whelming.  Find this during the holiday season and enjoy it with dinner, dessert or by itself. I enjoyed this more than the Nøgne Ø Winter Ale.

From the Bottle Label : “This holiday ale draws it inspiration from Glögg, a Norwegian spiced beverage enjoyed hot in winter.  Like Glögg, it goes well with nuts, dried fruit or cookies, but we recommend serving Peculiar Yule at a proper cellar temperature of 55F.  Ingredients: Maris Otter, Munich, chocolate and crystal malt; Chinook and Cascade hops; ginger, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water”

“The name Nøgne Ø means “naked island”, a poetic term used by Henrik Ibsen to describe any of the countless stark, barren outcroppings that are visible in the rough seas off Norway’s southern coast, where the brewery sits.  The founders gave Nøgne Ø a subtitle- “ The Uncompromising Brewery” – a plain statement of their mission to make ales of personality and individuality Brewing in traditional styles, but thoroughly inspired by the boldness of American brewing these Norwegian brewers fearlessly chart their own course.”

From their website: UNDERLIG JUL 15°P, 30 IBU, 6.5 ALC/VOL

The name of this beer is “Peculiar Christmas” in english. This spiced Christmas ale is strange – and indeed a fusion beer.  We have gathered inspiration from the Norwegian drink “gløgg”, and as such this is quite an uncompromising brew.  Best served with “goro” and “fattigmann”.  Recommended serving temperature 10°C/50°F, but you are free to try on higher temperatures….

Ingredients:  Maris Otter, Munich, caramel, and chocolate malt; Columbus and Cascade hops; 5 different spices, English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water

This is the 13th of my daily Christmas/Winter beers which I will be having until Christmas.  There are now only 16 more beers until Christmas!
